Flower Fruit and Seed

Flowers, Fruits & Seeds: A flower is the reproductive organ of a plant. It is the most beautiful part of the plant. They have different fragrances. Examples are: rose, jasmine, sunflower etc. The plants which bear flowers are called flowering plants like bougainvillea, mustard, sunflower etc. Those plants who do not bear flowers are called non – flowering plants like ferns, pines etc.

Fruits : A fruit is a mature ovary. It forms after fertilization in flowers. The ovary of the flower after fertilization grows  into fruit and ovules grows in to seeds. The fruit protect the seed. A fruit is generally made up of a fruit wall and seeds. Fruit wall is protective in function. It can be edible or non edible.

                             

Seeds :  A seed is the essence of life. It grows into a new plant. It can be of different colours and shape. Some seeds are also used for eating. When the seeds get adequate moisture, sunlight, nutrients than it sprout out of the seed coat and grows into new plant. A seed is usually made up of three parts :

  • Seed coat :  It is the hard outer covering of the seed. It is protective in function. It absorbs water and break down into two halves during the process of germination.
  •  Embryo : An  embryo give rise to the plant. It get protected by the seed coat and get nutrients from endosperm.
  •  Endosperm :  The endosperm provide nutrition to the developing embryo. It is located below the seed coat. The seeds remain viable till their is availability of nutrients.
